Understanding BMI

What Your BMI Score Means

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a widely used screening tool that estimates body fat based on height and weight. While it does not directly measure body fat percentage, it is a reliable indicator of health risk when interpreted alongside other factors such as waist circumference, blood pressure, and blood markers.

Below 18.5 — Underweight

May indicate insufficient muscle mass, nutritional deficiency, or underlying health conditions. Men in this range often benefit from structured nutrition and resistance training programmes.

18.5 – 24.9 — Healthy Weight

Associated with the lowest risk of weight-related health conditions. Men in this range should focus on maintaining muscle mass through resistance training, which typically declines after 40.

25.0 – 29.9 — Overweight

Associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and sleep apnoea. Even a 5–10% body weight reduction in this range produces measurable health improvements.

30.0 and Above — Obese

Significantly elevated risk of serious health conditions. Men in this range benefit most from a structured approach combining calorie management, resistance training, and medical supervision where appropriate.

BMI Limitations for Men

Why BMI Is Only Part of the Picture

BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. Men with high muscle mass — particularly those who train regularly — may have BMIs in the overweight range while carrying very little body fat. This is a significant limitation for active men over 40 who prioritise strength training.

A more complete assessment of body composition combines BMI with waist circumference (a direct measure of visceral fat, which is the most metabolically harmful type), body fat percentage, and standard blood markers including fasting glucose, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol.
